Compensation for expenses

You can apply for compensation for travel and accommodation expenses related to a work trial, job coaching or studies and for visits to our rehabilitation partner. The amounts of compensation are based on the Finnish Pension Alliance TELA’s recommendations, which are updated annually.

How can I apply for reimbursement of expenses?

You can claim travel and accommodation expenses by filling in a commuting invoice in our online service. Claim compensation for studies using a study notification. Both are available in the Varma Online Service in the section ‘Vocational rehabilitation’.

The compensation will be deposited into your account within roughly three weeks of your application. Please remember to claim compensation within six months of when the expenses were incurred.

Travel expenses

Claim compensation for travel expenses retroactively for each calendar month, for example January’s travel is claimed in February. We can pay compensation for your travel expenses if the one-way commute from your place of residence to the place of your work trial or studies is at least 10 kilometres. Include the length of the commute in the commuting invoice based on the most direct route. If needed, we will check the length of the route using a public journey planner.

We pay EUR 0.14 per kilometre in compensation for travel expenses and up to a maximum of EUR 750 per month. The compensation helps cover the rehabilitation expenses, but does not necessarily cover them entirely.

Please note that we do not pay compensation for travel expenses for paid rehabilitation periods. In that case, it is usually possible to deduct travel expenses in taxation.

We do not compensate travel expenses for apprenticeships that have begun on or after 1 January 2024. If your apprenticeship has begun on 31 December 2023 or before that, we can provide compensation for travel expenses between the home and workplace.

In the case of apprenticeships, commutes between the residence and school are often the responsibility of the apprenticeship office. You can contact the apprenticeship office if you have any questions about compensation for travel expenses.

We compensate commuting expenses for your visits to a rehabilitation partner according to public transport charges. If it is not possible to use public transport due to a lack of transport connections or an illness, we pay a per-kilometre allowance of EUR 0.14 per kilometre. We compensate expenses retroactively each month based on your commuting invoice.

Compensation for studies

You are entitled to compensation for studies if you study with the help of vocational rehabilitation. Compensation for studies is EUR 300 per term. With the compensation for studies you can pay for study expenses such as study materials, a computer and health care fees. If there are any other payments related to your studies, let us know. We will consider compensating them separately.

You will receive compensation for studies if your studies last at least two months per term. In the case of a partial degree or qualification of less than one year, we will pay EUR 300 as a lump-sum compensation.

Apply for compensation for studies by filling in a notification of studies in the Varma Online Service immediately after your studies begin and then whenever a new term begins in January or August.

Apply for compensation at the latest within six months of the start of the term.

Compensation for accommodation

If you incur expenses from residences in both your home municipality and rehabilitation municipality, you can receive compensation for them. We can compensate additional expenses resulting from an additional flat and for travel expenses between the municipalities when the distance is at least 70 kilometres.

Discuss with your rehabilitation specialist if you need to live in a different town or city due to your vocational rehabilitation.

More information on compensation for accommodation

Apply for compensation for accommodation expenses by filling in a commuting invoice in the Varma Online Service. When you claim compensation for the first time, send a copy of your rental agreement and rent receipt. In the future, you can send a commuting invoice every three months. Attach a copy of the previous month’s rent receipt to your commuting invoice.

You will receive compensation of no more than EUR 25 per day and no more than EUR 750 per month (2026). If the accommodation expenses are lower, we will provide compensation based on the actual expenses.

If you have accommodation expenses in two municipalities, we can also compensate you for the commutes between them, but for no more than four return journeys per month. The compensation is paid monthly in arrears. The compensation for travel expenses is EUR 0.14 per kilometre and up to a maximum of EUR 375 per month.

If you have to arrange temporary accommodation in another municipality during the rehabilitation programme, always discuss the matter with your rehabilitation specialist first.

You can apply for compensation for temporary accommodation up to a maximum of EUR 120 per day and EUR 750 per month. The compensation is paid in arrears based on the commuting invoice and receipt. Please note that we do not provide compensation for e.g. service, parking, cleaning or food expenses.
